Bunk’Art 2 Tirana: The Secret Police Bunker Museum

Interior entrance of Bunk'Art 2 Museum in Tirana, Albania, featuring a concrete dome lined with portraits commemorating victims of communist persecution

Bunk’Art 2 is a Cold War bunker right beside Skanderbeg Square, turned into a museum about life in communist Albania during nearly five decades of one-party rule under Enver Hoxha and his successors. It’s smaller and more intense than Bunk’Art 1, and because it’s in the center, it’s the bunker museum most visitors to Tirana actually see.

What’s inside Bunk’Art 2

The bunker was built for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and has around 24 rooms connected by narrow, low-ceilinged corridors. The exhibition opens with the founding of the Albanian police in 1912, but most of it is about how the communist state shaped and controlled everyday life until 1991: propaganda, near-total isolation from the outside world, a border no one was allowed to cross, and the police and Sigurimi apparatus that enforced it all. Along the way you’ll see original artifacts, reconstructed offices and interrogation rooms, and testimony from ordinary Albanians who lived through the regime.

The bunker itself is part of the story. Hoxha was convinced Albania could be invaded at any moment, and his regime built an estimated 173,000 concrete bunkers across the country, many of which still dot the landscape today. This one was designed to keep the state running through a nuclear attack, and you’ll still find details like decontamination showers meant to rinse off fallout (thankfully, they were never used). Walking its dim, winding tunnels is the easiest way to understand the siege mentality that defined the whole communist era.

It’s a heavy visit, and there’s a lot of text on the walls (the audio guide is worth it if the English translations start to feel clunky). Take your time in the rooms covering the labor camps, internment and the border; that’s where the human stories are.

Tips for visiting

  • Go first thing in the morning or late in the day. Midday it can get crowded in the corridors.
  • It overlaps a little with the House of Leaves. If you’re choosing, House of Leaves is usually less crowded, but Bunk’Art 2 has the bunker atmosphere and more information.
  • Bring cash, just in case.
