Tirana’s opera house is the National Theater of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble, inside the Palace of Culture on the east side of Skanderbeg Square. Tickets are cheap by European standards, and seeing a ballet or opera here is one of the most underrated evenings out in the city.

The Palace of Culture
The long, colonnaded building that fills one side of the square is the Palace of Culture. Its foundation stone was laid by the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1959, on the site of Tirana’s old bazaar. Albania broke with the Soviet Union soon afterwards, but the building was completed in 1963. Besides the opera and ballet theater, it houses the National Library.
Seeing a show
The season runs roughly autumn to early summer, with opera, ballet and folk performances from the national folk ensemble. The repertoire is mostly the classics (think Madama Butterfly, Carmen, Swan Lake) plus Albanian works.
Check the official website before you go. It lists what’s on each day, along with special events like one-off concerts and festival performances that are often announced at short notice.
- Buy tickets in person at the box office. Online booking is limited and emails often go unanswered.
- Bring cash in ALL.
- Dress is smart-casual; no need for a suit.
Before the show, have a drink on the square and watch the Clock Tower and Et’hem Bej Mosque light up.
