Bunk’Art 1 is a huge five-level nuclear bunker built for Enver Hoxha and his inner circle on the eastern edge of Tirana. These days, the bunker is a museum about Albania from the Second World War to the end of communism. It sits right by the Dajti Ekspres cable car, so most people do both on the same day.

Why Bunk’Art 1 is worth the trip
Albania built well over 173,000 bunkers under Hoxha, but this was the big one: a secret complex dug into the hillside, sealed behind heavy concrete doors and designed to keep the regime running through a nuclear attack. It has more than 100 rooms over five floors, including Hoxha’s own quarters and a hall where parliament was meant to meet underground.
Today the rooms tell the story of 20th-century Albania, with original objects, documents and photographs, plus contemporary art installations in some of the spaces. It’s cool inside all year (around 16°C), which makes it a good escape on a hot afternoon and a perfect stop before you head up the mountain to the summit of Dajti.
As you walk through the tunnels you’ll pass Hoxha’s private apartment and office, kept with their original furniture, alongside the rooms set aside for his prime minister, Mehmet Shehu. Further in are the decontamination showers, ventilation and generator rooms, and the communications centre with its old radio and telephone equipment, all of which show how seriously the regime took the threat of attack. Exhibitions cover Albania’s military history from the Second World War through the Cold War, as well as everyday life under communism. The highlight for many visitors is the vast assembly hall, which now hosts occasional concerts and events, so check the schedule before you go.
Bunk’Art 1 or Bunk’Art 2?
If you only have time for one, Bunk’Art 1 is the more memorable experience: the walk through the long entrance tunnel and the scale of the place stay with you. Bunk’Art 2 is smaller, central and focused on the secret police. Doing Bunk’Art 1 first gives you the context that makes the second one click.
How to get to Bunk’Art 1

- On foot from the cable car: the Dajti Ekspres lower station is a short walk up the road.
